Admissions Tutors will be interested in your reasons for choosing the course(s) listed in Section 4, your career aspirations, and relevant experience and information concerning your intellectual, social, sporting or other interests. You should also give details here of any non-examined subjects you are studying. If you have been out of education for some time, please outline any relevant experience that may also be taken into account in lieu of formal qualifications, either at home or in voluntary or paid work. It may also be helpful to explain any breaks in your career. If you are applying for deferred entry (i.e. a year beyond the next academic year), please give your reasons for so doing.

Your referee should know you well enough to write about you and your suitability for postgraduate study. The reference should not be written by a family member, other relatives or friends. References are often provided by a responsible person who knows you; this could be an employer or an academic from higher education.
Postgraduate/Post-experience courses
In order that we can evaluate an applicant’s academic and intellectual
capacity, your reference should if possible cover:
1 Suitability for the course(s) applied for
2 Intellectual qualities including:
a) development to date and previous examination performance with special reference to any factors which may in your opinion have adversely influenced the result.
b) present performance
c) potential, including an assessment of the probable results of any pending examinations.
3 Personal qualities, such as motivation, powers of analysis, communication skills and independent thought
4 Career aspirations
5 Health and other personal circumstances relevant to the application
6 Athletic, social and other interests
Postgraduate Research Programmes
We would value your opinion on:
1 the applicant's suitability for the chosen field of study,
2 his/her aptitude for original work, and
3 (for overseas students) an estimate of proficiency in English
If you knew the applicant as a student: details of academic performance and of any project or research-based work undertaken by the student in the final year, with an indication of whether you consider these details to be a true reflection of the applicant's abilities
If you are the applicant's present or former employer: an outline of responsibilities and an appraisal of competence and initiative.
If the applicant has applied for a Professional Doctorate the current employer must confirm your agreement to allow access to the work-based research and that you will allow the applicant to meet the commitments of the research programme.
